Three new models are being added to the Millenary collection at SIHH next month, with smaller cases and more sparkle than ever. The Millenary is one of three collections from Audemars Piguet that contain ladies watches, but essentially, it is the most female-centric of the full collections within the brand. The Royal Oak and the Royal Oak Offshore both have ladies versions, but they began as, and are known mainly as mens collections. The jewelry collections are limited-edition one-offs, certainl [...]
If there was a checklist for creating a successful luxury timepiece in 2020, it would read something like design-oriented stainless steel integrated bracelet sports watch with a blue dial. Bulgari has been one of the most influential brands in the integrated bracelet sports watch space in recent years, especially with the release of the 100 meter rated Octo Finissimo Automatic Steel earlier in 2020, but for summer 2020 the brand has fully completed the hypothetical checklist at last-the Bulgari [...]
When Sothebys?sold the Patek Philippe Supercomplication in 1999, it became the most expensive watch ever sold, fetching a whopping??$11,002,500. Or did it? Actually, as Bloomberg revealed?in 2012?based on some court documents,?the winning buyer,?Qatari Royal Family member Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Bin Ali Al-Thani has never paid up for it-along with another $70 million worth of other?lots that he?purchased?at Sothebys auctions. Consequently,?after?this exceptional, one of a kind timepiece has spe [...]
Bronze has been around a long?time. Weve been alloying copper with other metals for centuries (millennia, even). Its not even that new when it comes to watch cases. Weve seen bronze cases come from brands big and small. The most notable?is, from my perspective, the venerable Panerai PAM 671 or the newly released 968. Bell Ross has opted for this material in its newly announced?Bell Ross BR 03-92 Diver Bronze Green Watch. This isnt the first time BR has used this material. Weve seen it in the [...]
Patek Philippe is a star among watch makers. Almost like a higher class omega, Patek stays high among the uber-elite, and sneers down upon the lower classes of watches and people. This is where you get the sales people who treat you like your father cleaned their fathers bathrooms. Regardless of their attitude, Patek Philippe is an innovator in the watch world, and they helped further the movement to bring back the mechanical watch when quartz watches looked to be taking over in the 1980s. Today [...]
The Breitling Summit held in Los Angeles proved a busy landing strip for a whole squadron of Breitling Avenger releases. Fourteen new references took flight, along with the previously discussed Breitling Aviator 8 Mosquito Chronograph. These new models continue the restructuring of Breitlings offering under the leadership of Georges Kern, joining the Aviator 8 and Classic Navitimer as part of the air universe. The new Avenger lineup merges the old Avenger style with that of the Breitling Colt, f [...]
An exclusive partnership between Breitling and Govberg Jewelers offers this Chronomat 44 Special Edition timepiece, as a series of 50 limited edition pieces. The 44mm case is brushed steel with a high polished finish and a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback displaying its Breitling Caliber 01 movement. Basically the Chronomat 44 you know and love, but with a different set of dial colors. Over the past twenty-five years, we have watched Breitling transition from its infancy to a horological su [...]
When it comes to iconic shapes in watches, the Richard Mille?tonneau case is certainly one of the more notable. Also notable is the fact that watch models aimed at women generally have a plethora of jewels plastered all over them, and while I am generally averse to that particular styling trick, I am about to give it a pass, as the Richard Mille RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur hides-and reveals-some genuinely fascinating?technical feats inside its diamond encrusted case.To begin with, have a look at t [...]
Sponsored Post written for by advertiserWhen discussing dress timepieces, the idea of timelessness comes up frequently. The ideal dress watch should feel rooted in tradition, elegant without feeling either antiquated or overly modern, and above all balanced. One of the prime examples of this in the current watch market is Hamilton. For the latest addition to the American Classic line, the American Classic Spirit of Liberty collection, Hamilton has blended together classical design elements, a t [...]
When I first noticed the Sport Evolution watch collection a few years ago I felt as though it was Glashutte Originals take on making a fancier omega Submariner. While the Sport Evolution is a bit larger (by 2mm) the watches have a lot in common. Both are dive watches (though people rarely dive in either of them), though with different depth ratings (200 meters for the Sport Evolution, and 300 meters for the Submariner), have rotating bezels, nice steel bracelets, easy to read dials, and in-house [...]
Regular readers of mine know that I get a kick out of spotting watches in TV shows and movies. A regular viewer of Lost, I have always been curious to know what watch was being worn by Matthew Foxs character Jack Shephard. Of course, while on the island he does not wear a watch, but back in civilization in Los Angeles, he is always seen the watch watch. The show producers are loathe to give the watch much camera time. In fact, the only watch that was given attention was the omega Daytona that Ji [...]
While I am generally a big fan of Breitling watches, I dont personally like a lot of the Breitling for Bentley timepieces. These have a distinct design ethos apart from the rest of the Breitling range. I like the concept, but many of the pieces have a design that does not speak to me. Having said that, I really like this new limited edition Breitling for Bentley Barnato 42 Midnight Carbon watch with its good size and restrained look compared to its siblings. The largest watches Breitling makes ar [...]
If you are a fan of Monty Python then you are a fan of comedy frequently derived from irony, and often from absurdity. Consider me such a fan, and I have a feeling that Mr. Mille falls into this same camp. At SIHH 2013 my enduring image of him is sitting in a chair and speaking energetically with his hands. Absurdity is the easiest way to explain the combination of features and the conception of the new Richard Mille RM036 G-Sensor Tourbillon watch. In brief, the watch is a mechanical tourbillon- [...]
Time leaves scars on us all. There is no way to avoid the ageing process, no way to slow times relentless assault on our delicate physical form. Terrifying as the thought may be, we start to appreciate the marks that time left on our skin as we perhaps start seeing it as character-it is impossible to imitate and it is unique. Thats just what I think about when I look down at my wrist and see the face of the Parmigiani Tonda 1950 Titanium Abyss Meteorite staring back up at me. The dial, hewn from [...]
The troubling trend of withdrawals from the 2020 Baselworld trade show continued this morning, with Japanese industry giant Citizen announcing that both Citizen and its stablemate brand Bulova will not be attending the show. In its official statement, Citizen cited the growing threat of the coronavirus epidemic as the reason for the abrupt decision. In November of last year, Citizen Group had delivered a statement reconfirming its commitment to Baselworld for 2020 amid news of scheduling-related [...]
The name of this watch doesnt actually include its most thrilling feature. For 2011, this is the Blancpain L-evolution Tourbillon Large Date watch. It is true that it has a flying tourbillon and a big date indicator but turn it over and you see the power reserve indicator on the rotor. Complications on rotors seem to be really in this year. In 2011 alone, on automatic rotors, we have seen seconds indicators (Cartier), tourbillons (Jacob Co.), and now a power reserve indicator on this Blancpain. [...]
This month, luxury automotive giant Porsche celebrates 70 years of manufacturing prestigious sports cars. A lesser known fact about Porsche is that in 1972 Ferdinand Alexander Porsche started Porsche Design; a branch of Porsche dedicated to the design principles of its father brand in other fields of mechanical and non-mechanical areas like sunglasses, electronics, and watches. To celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Porsche, Porsche Design has released the 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edi [...]
Without delay, I am proud to bring you an review of the new Omega Speedmaster Mark II watch. This version with orange dial accents is the ref. 327.10.43.50.06.001, while with a more traditional black and white dial it is the Speedmaster Mark II ref. 327.10.43.50.01.001.Like many a watchnerd, I have a fondness for the Omega?Speedmaster. We love it for its history, its connection with NASA and the Apollo program, and for the fact that its still made today. Come to think of it, do you have any ide [...]
No doubt it is cool. It is also wildly expensive and a showpiece above all else. This new highly limited edition watch from Richard Mille is the RM 056 and comes in an all sapphire crystal case. It is very visually intriguing and costs a mere $1,650,000. Probably easier to laugh about the price rather than get upset.According to Richard Mille it requires over 1000 hours to produce the case of the watch. The case is identical to that of previous Richard Mille Felipe Massa pieces. The movement is [...]
Breitling is known for large case sizes, all watches being COSC-certified, and recently poaching Georges Kern from Richemont. Their recently announced limited-edition version of the Breitling Chronoliner B04 watch with a red gold case fits right in with the blingier, showier side of Breitling. With chronograph and GMT complications, the B04 is touted by Breitling as the flight captains chronograph. As a note, given development and production timelines, this watch is very likely to have been kick- [...]
