Today we are looking at a minor yet notable update to the Glashutte Original Senator Cosmopolite watch that is now available with the ever-popular combination of blue dial and steel case.Saxon watchmaker Glashutte Original made its mark on world timer watches in 2012 when it introduced the frankly epic Grande Cosmopolite Tourbillon, a $363,000 watch that brought to the world one of the most complex, yet most intuitive, world time displays to date. Fast forward three years, and the Glashutte Orig [...]
Hublot watches just announced that its charismatic and successful CEO Jean-Claude Biver has stepped down as the brands CEO. I state this with sadness as Jean-Claude has not only been a friend but a very good example of what a Swiss watch CEO should be like. He is a master of marketing and collaborations. He not only knows how to save a brand but also how to make it something that the non watch news wants to cover. As a member of the press if there are two things I can say about him that all CEOs [...]
Cartier is rarely the first name that comes to mind when it comes to the annals of fine watchmaking, but the French maison has quietly and consistently been bolstering its catalog of super-interesting, high-end models. Case in point: the recently announced Rotonde De Cartier Minute Repeater Mysterious Double Tourbillon-an ambitious, Geneva Seal-certified creation, characterized by its tourbillon complication at 10:00, seemingly floating in space. The rhythmic illusion of this special Cartier is m [...]
Georges Kern, CEO of Schaffhausen, Switzerland-based IWC watches, stands up from our table to deliver a welcome speech for a room of guests invited to dinner after the first day of Watches Wonders 2015 here in Hong Kong. Known for quick, sharp remarks, and a realistic vision of his company and the luxury watch space, Kern spares no time addressing what he feels are the primary things his colleagues should be thinking about in terms of Asia and the watch industry that has fared so well in the re [...]
A few months ago while with Maurice Lacroix at their manufacture I spent time with them going over small details on the prototype versions of these new Pontos S dive watches. We looked at little things like the polishes on the rings around subsidiary chronograph dials, colors, strap choices and other details on the dials. Going from idea, to computer design, to final product is challenging and requires a very close attention to even the little things. What I can say is that the best watch brands [...]
Sponsored PostLong known for its Big Bang, Classic Fusion and King Power models, Hublots unique MP collection was first unveiled at the Geneva Trade Show in January 2011 with the introduction of the MP-01. These record-breaking pieces are made possible by a team of 30 developers and engineers devoted entirely to grand complications and extraordinary movements. The collection accurately reflects Hublots Chairman, Jean-Claude Bivers statement: More watchmaking, more mastery, more innovationThe fir [...]
Hamilton is among the larger US based makers that actually makes watches you can be proud of owning. Hamilton is actually no longer US owned as it is part of the Swatch Group, but there is still a distinct American touch to each of their watches. This is as opposed to such American based watch makers as Timex and Fossil, who for the most part, dont produce watches for people who like watches. Timex recently hired a new CEO who is trying to push them upmarket, so time will tell where they end up. [...]
I was really happy to get my hands on a Patek Philippe Ref. 5235 watch. It apparently wasnt ready in time to show people at Baselworld 2012. Patek shared with me that the reason for this was the dial. There is a specially engraved Patek Philippe name logo that needed to be done just right. The dial is a mostly brushed piece of metal with some fine detailing that I can imagine must have been tough to perfect. The finished version will be very impressive for watch lovers who know what they are loo [...]
Since 1993, Omegas Seamaster Professional Diver 300m has been at the heart of the brands sport watch collection. Just in time for Baselworld, Omega have announced an updated Seamaster Diver 300 featuring a ceramic bezel, redesigned ceramic dial, new 42mm case size, and Omegas Master Chronometer C0-Axial 8800 movement.SpecificationsBrand: OmegaModel: Seamaster Diver 300mDimensions: 4 [...]
These two watches are interesting limited edition Royal Oak watches done in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Royal Oak collection. While not the only limited edition models for 2012, these are the two skeletonized versions and each come in platinum cases a bit ironic to celebrate the famous high-end steel watch.Audemars Piguet probably still sells more Royal Oak (including Royal Oak Offshore) watches than anything else in their range. If you recall, they released a slightly redesigned versi [...]
No Longer Made is a series done in collaboration with our partners at eBay, in which editors feature their favorite watches that are no longer in production.?It may be too subjective to call the IWC Pilots Watch Chronograph ref. 3706 the best chrono from the (German part of) Swiss brand, but its definitely among my favorites, along with the IWC Doppelchronograph Ref. 3713. History continues to be kind toward the duly beloved Ref. 3706 aka the Fliegerchronograph (as well as the rarer ceramic Ref [...]
The turf wars are getting serious. This time I look at the battle on US soil between Swiss brands Audemars Piguet and Hublot. The heat between them has been on for a few years now. Behind the scenes the fight goes on all the time with each trying to one up each other. It isnt a battle they publicly acknowledge, but the drama is interesting. Winner, loser? I think in a sense they both win because competition leads to better business and clever thinking. The funny thing is that in my opinion Audem [...]
Comparing the watch releases of SIHH 2010 and Baselworld 2010, I would have to say that for the most part I was more impressed with the releases at SIHH, and it was a significantly smaller show. Why that is I am not sure, but here is another one of the good things that I spotted. This isnt just another Panerai watch, but rather the PAM339 in a special ceramic case. While it doesnt surprise me to see Panerai going ceramic, it just sort of happened without notice.Panerai doesnt even call their mat [...]
Since the Hublot F1 King Power as a watch is not new I will not going into detail about the technicalities. This is a new limited edition of 250 pieces (like all of them) for Japans Suzuka race track released recently at 2011 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix. It has a cool skeletonized dial and ceramic disc brake-style bezel. The case is 48mm wide in zirconium (a lot like titanium). The neatest part are the predominantly white and red colors meant as an homage to the Japanese rising sun flag. [...]
The ultimate homage vintage watch would something that the Flintstones wore, the sundial watch; quirky right? These days we like the looks of old with the quality of new. I dont think a sundial would cut it. The results are homage or classic themed watches that say Dad, I like watches that where cool when you were kid better. Dont get confused though. We arent talking about actual vintage watches. These are brand new watches made to emulate something from back then. Who says new looks are always [...]
Written by Will Kaufman for Released last year at SIHH 2015, the?Cartier?Rotonde de Cartier Grande Complication made a powerful debut, claiming the title of the most complicated Cartier watch ever produced. After numerous impressive and unique ventures dedicated to pushing the boundaries of watchmaking-just think of the Cartier ID2 watch with a vacuum inside its case or this Astrocalendaire?C?Cartier?really is flexing its muscles here in an effort to show off its capabilities and knowhow in more [...]
Have you ever wondered what a frozen dial would look like? Well, wonder no more, because the new-for-2022 Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date brings that aesthetic in not one or two, but three colorways. This watch is nspired not by tropical waters but rather by the glacial lakes of the Mont-Blanc Massif and the texture of glacial ice - lets take an icy dive into the details. The case of the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea watch is in stainless steel on all iterations and measures 41mm in diameter and [...]
At the outset of 2022, one major topic is on the minds of many watch lovers out there: Will buying watches still be so difficult this year? Unfortunately, for many people, 2022 will probably still prove challenging when it comes to purchasing the most-hyped timepieces. This complex situation is one which we have frequently discussed on , if only because it continues to be a thorn in the side of parts of the watch industry, including many members of the audience. It is my hope that by encouragin [...]
